Week 2 belonged to freshman quarterbacks, as USC's Matt Barkley and Michigan's Tate Forcier engineered game-winning fourth-quarter drives in the day's two marquee games. There are more frosh demanding attention, however. Dion Lewis is making Pitt fans forget LeSean McCoy after just two games, while Tennessee's Bryce Brown and Alabama's Trent Richardson are already playing key roles in their teams' offenses.

Freshmen aren't the only ones who made their mark Saturday. Houston quarterback Case Keenum was the top fantasy player in the nation last year as a sophomore, and thanks to a road upset of fifth-ranked Oklahoma State he's finally hit the mainstream. Wideouts Tyron Carrier and Patrick Edwards are the top targets in the Cougars' potent offense; they team with running backs Bryce Beall and Charles Sims to provide a bevy of viable fantasy options nearly every week.

Cream of the Crop

Star fantasy performers with favorable matchups

Dezmon Briscoe, WR, Kansas: Briscoe was a late suspension for the Jayhawks' opener against Northern Colorado, but he returned to post eight catches for 154 yards last week at UTEP. More big plays are in the offing as Duke comes to town this Saturday.

Colt McCoy, QB, Texas: After a miserable first half, the Heisman front-runner nearly led a spirited comeback in last year's thriller in Lubbock. Now at home and heavily favored, McCoy and the Longhorns figure to light up the scoreboard for all four quarters against a retooled Tech defense that lost both first-team all-Big 12 safeties.

Marshwan Gilyard , WR, Cincinnati: The Bearcats routed Rutgers in the opener, leaving no doubt that last year's surprise Big East champs are capable of repeating. Gilyard could be on his way to an All-American season catching balls from strong-armed quarterback Tony Pike. A big game is in store for the Bearcats' passing game against an Oregon State defense that lost two NFL pass-rushers and all four starters in the secondary.

DeMarco Murray, RB, Oklahoma: With quarterback Sam Bradford still out, Oklahoma will be largely keeping the ball on the ground during this part of the schedule. The explosive Murray cracked 100 yards on just 10 carries against Idaho State, and figures to be a factor again Saturday when the Sooners host Tulsa.

Derrick Washington, RB, Missouri: The leading rusher in the Big 12 North last season, Washington is off to a solid start with 181 yards through two games. He'll have his best day yet this week against FCS Furman.

Dexter McCluster, WR, Mississippi: McCluster and his Ole Miss mates were off last week after opening the season with a lackluster win over Memphis. They'll get in shape for the SEC season with FCS Southeastern Louisiana, the latest installment in the Rebels' laughable nonconference schedule.

Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State: Bryant is the top overall fantasy wideout, this year's Michael Crabtree. With Kendall Hunter sidelined, Bryant and the passing game will see plenty of looks as the Cowboys vent their frustration on hapless Rice.

Team Defense, Alabama: The Tide held half of their opponents under 200 total yards last season, and Nick Saban's unit is even stronger this year, notwithstanding a misleading 38 points surrendered through two games. Forty-point underdog North Texas comes to Tuscaloosa Saturday, and the Mean Green will be without starting quarterback Riley Dodge.

Team Defense, TCU: The Frogs' perennial top-10 stop unit is more likely than not to pitch a shutout against woefully overmatched FCS entrant Texas State, and kick in a score or two along the way.

John Clay, RB, Wisconsin: Sophomore Clay has emerged as the clear No. 1 in a Badgers backfield that includes junior Zach Brown. The 250-pound bruiser will be unstoppable in this week's matchup with FCS Wofford

Russell Wilson, QB, North Carolina State: Expectations are high for Wilson, who last year became the first freshman to earn first-team All-ACC honors at quarterback. Although the Wolfpack's offense managed just 133 yards in the opener against South Carolina, the schedule is getting them on track now. Wilson threw four scoring strikes as the Pack poured on 484 yards last week in a 65-7 rout of FCS Murray State, and due up next is a second straight FCS squad in Gardner-Webb.

Opportunity Knocks

Seldom-rostered players with favorable matchups

Team Kicking, Central Michigan: Star quarterback Dan LeFevour likely won't go the distance against an Alcorn State team that lost to Southern Miss 52-0 to start the season, but the Chippewas' offense should still provide plenty of opportunities for All-MAC senior kicker Andrew Aguila.

DuJuan Harris, RB, Troy: The Trojans' featured back ran for over 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns last year, but has been bottled up so far this season. A home date with porous UAB will get him back on track.

Daniel Porter, RB, Louisiana Tech: Coming off a 1,100-yard campaign, Porter has averaged just 50 yards in Tech's first two games, road losses to Auburn and Navy. He figures to break out against a Nicholls State team that dropped a 72-0 decision to Air Force two weeks ago.

Greg Salas, WR, Hawaii: Quarterback Greg Alexander and the Hawaii passing attack managed a .500 record last year even without departed offensive mentor June Jones. Salas was the leading receiver among a group that lacked obvious star power, posting an 800-yard campaign in 2008. This year the former walk-on appears headed for bigger things, with 375 yards through two games. He'll be the go-to guy this week at UNLV.

On the Shelf

Key players who need a week off due to injury, matchup or circumstance

Julio Jones, WR, Alabama: Jones is still nursing a bruised knee suffered against Florida International. His status for this week isn't yet known, but there will be no need for the Tide to rush him back for outmanned North Texas.

Rob Gronkowski, TE, Arizona: The fulcrum of the Wildcats' passing attack, Gronkowski was expected back this week, but it now appears that he'll miss a third consecutive game with a back injury.

Arkelon Hall, QB, Memphis: A home game against Tennessee-Martin would seem an ideal time to launch the dual-threat senior into fantasy service, but coach Tommy West will start sophomore Tyler Bass over Hall this week in an attempt to shake up the Tigers' struggling offense.

Fresh Faces

Players without much starting experience who will put up big numbers

Keith Toston, RB, Oklahoma State: All-American Kendall Hunter is doubtful with an injury sustained in last week's loss to Houston, so Toston will get to carry the load as the Cowboys bounce back against a soft Rice defense.

Shawnbrey McNeal, RB, SMU: It's not often that a running back for a June Jones-coached team will make much of a fantasy impact, but Miami transfer McNeal has been the Mustangs' secret weapon so far. SMU's run-and-shoot mostly involves pitch-and-catch between quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell and stellar wideouts Emmanuel Sanders and Aldrick Robinson. This year, though, McNeal has given SMU a ground game, averaging 112 yards through two games. All of the aforementioned Ponies are rosterable against Pac-10 embarrassment Washington State.
